It was founded on 1 October 1977 as a subsidiary of EL AL under the name EL AL Charter Services Lda. In 1981, its name was changed to Sun D'Or International Airlines.
The name combines the English word "sun" with the French "d'or" for gold - hence, Golden Sun.
It is based at Ben Gurion Airport and is a subsidiary of EL AL.
It operates mainly seasonal destinations, aiming to meet market demand.
